An acid with more than one replaceable hydrogen atom. Examples include the dibasic sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and tribasic phosphoric(V) (orthophosphoric) acid (H3PO4). Replacement of all the hydrogens by metal atoms forms normal salts. If not all the hydrogens are replaced, acid salts are formed.
