Adult polycystic kidney disease is an autosomal dominant disorder in which there are renal and hepatic cysts and intracranial aneurysm, although there is considerable variability. Mutations in several genes can give rise to the disorder including those for polycystins 1 and 2. An infantile form of the disease is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutation in the gene encoding fibrocystin.
