(PCO) the presence of more than 12 follicles in each ovary (2–9 mm in diameter), or increased ovarian volume (>10 ml), or both. The presence of enlarged ovaries with multiple small cysts and a hypervascularized androgen-secreting stroma (connective tissue) is associated with signs of androgen excess (see polycystic ovary syndrome).
