A standardized pictorial summary of the pollen record for a particular location. The vertical axis represents depth, and the proportions or absolute amounts of the various pollen types occurring at different levels are shown by bar histograms or by points on a continuous curve. Conventionally, similar patterns are grouped together on the diagram, with arboreal types shown first, followed in turn by shrubs, herbs, and spores.
