Quick Reference

The first enzyme shown to catalyze the synthesis of polynucleotides. It was isolated from Azotobacter vinelandii in 1955, and it linked ribonucleotides together in a random fashion. Subsequently this enzyme was used to produce artificial messenger RNA molecules. See Chronology, 1955, Grunberg-Manago and Ochoa; 1961, Nirenberg and Matthaei.
