1 The process of checking a hardware device to see if some event has occurred. For example, a computer may poll a transmission line to see if any data is ready to be transferred from the line. Polling is normally carried out at regular intervals.

2 A term used in a software context to describe the process whereby one program sends regular messages to another program in order to check whether the second program has data for it or to check on the state of the second program.
