French term, invariably used with contempt, for highly conservative academic art. It derives from the resemblance of the helmets of the warriors in classical paintings to those of firemen (‘pompiers’). It was doubtless this which inspired Yves Klein, when working on his fire paintings, to have a ‘pompier’, complete with uniform and helmet, to douse the flames with his hose.
