A method of classifying stars as either population I or population II bodies, devised in 1944 by Wilhelm Baade (1893–1960). Population I stars are the young metal-rich highly luminous stars found in the spiral arms of galaxies. Population II stars are older metal-deficient stars that occur in the centres of galaxies.
