An increasingly popular concept that describes how a person develops his or her career through acquiring a diverse set of skills and experiences. Instead of a person's career being evaluated simply in terms of upward progression through the organizational hierarchy (see career ladder), it is seen as a collection (portfolio) of varied work experiences that demonstrate practical expertise, knowledge, and ability acquired through lateral career moves within an organization or across organizations. The concept of portfolio career is one of several that have been advanced by management writers, such as Charles Handy, who suggest we are witnessing a fundamental shift in the structure of the labour market and the decline of long-term employment.
