A word meaning level with the gunwale, in connection with the yards of a sailing vessel. An order to ‘lower the yards, a-port-last’, or ‘a-portoise’, was to lower them down to the gunwale. For a ship to ride in this manner was for it to ride out a gale with its lower yards struck down.
