(1572–1635), English geographer and colonist, studied under Hakluyt and came to Virginia (1619) as secretary of state for the colony. While on a trading voyage, he was wrecked in the Azores and captured by Spaniards, but managed to return to England. His lively accounts of Virginia were published in Smith's Generall Historie and later scholarly collections.
