Ukrainian dancer and choreographer. He studied at the Moscow Ballet School and graduated into the Bolshoi Ballet in 1982, where he was eventually promoted to principal. In 1992 he moved to the Royal Danish Ballet and two years later to San Francisco Ballet. He began choreographing in 1990 and, starting with his solo for SFB principal Muriel Maffre in 1997, he has created numerous works for the company including Magrittomania (2000), Damned (2002), Study in Motion (mus. Alexander Scriabin, 2004), Reflections (mus. Mendelssohn, 2005), and Ballet Mori (2006). In 2003 he also collaborated with Helgi Tomasson on a new staging of Don Quixote. In 2006 when Possokhov retired from the stage he was made choreographer in residence at SFB. He has also made works for other companies including Oregon Ballet (Firebird, mus. Stravinsky, 2004 and La Valse mus. 2005), the Bolshoi Ballet (Cinderella, 2006), and Georgian State Ballet (Sagalobeli, 2007).
