The back part or lobe of the pituitary gland that is responsive to a variety of pituitary, adrenal, gonadal, and hypothalamic hormones and that secretes oxytocin and vasopressin in response to neural stimulation. It is one of the circumventricular organs and is called the neurohypophysis. Compare anterior pituitary.
