postsynaptic cell

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The cell that receives a signal from the presynaptic cell and responds with depolarization. In a chemical synapse the presynaptic cell releases neurotransmitter molecules that bind to receptors on the postsynaptic cell. In an electrical synapse it is the cell that responds and, unless it is a rectifying synapse (as most are), either cell could be postsynaptic according to the direction of information flow.
