A large, extended abdomen, due to the accumulation of body fluids and fat. It can sometimes be the result of malnutrition (e.g. in children deprived of protein, a pot belly may develop due to the infiltration of fat into the liver; see kwashiorkor), but is more often due to overindulgence in food and alcohol, and poor abdominal muscle tone. It is more common in men and is linked with several metabolic disorders. See also abdominal muscles;android fat distribution; and Syndrome X.
