Griffith Powel was born in Llan Sawel, Carmarthenshire and died in Oxford. Little is known of the life of this early Welsh logician. We know that he entered Jesus College, Oxford in 1581, graduating BA in 1584, and proceeding MA (1589), BCL (1593) and DCL (1599). From 1613 until his death he was Principal of Jesus College – an institution famous, of course, for its strong Welsh connections. His place in the history of philosophy is secured by two logic textbooks, one on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, the other on the Sophistical Fallacies.
