After an apprenticeship with Daniel Brown, Pote opened a shop in 1725 in Charing Cross. He aided Thomas Bartlett's widow in running her Eton bookshop, and married their daughter. Bookseller to Eton College, he started a newspaper in 1745, the Eton Journal, to cover the Jacobite rebellion.
