After studying bookbinding at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, he worked with D. Cockerell and became a partner in his firm, until setting up his own bindery in 1947. Powell was not particularly interested in cover design, but rather in the highest standards of craftsmanship. In 1953, he rebound the Book of Kells.
