Quick Reference

Appointed a junior assistant of the then Wellcome Historical Medical Library in 1930—during the final phase of its founder's wide-ranging acquisitions—he became librarian in 1953. Responsible for its refurbishment (1962) and for the catalogue of its pre-1640 medical books (1962), he transformed it from an ill-housed subsidiary of the museum holdings into the leading British collection in the history of medicine.
