Pratt was a mathematician and physicist, and Archdeacon of Calcutta. He attempted to calculate the mass of the Himalayas, after discrepancies were found in the Trigonometrical Survey of India. He proposed that high mountains had a lower density than other parts of the crust, and went on to develop his own version of the theory of isostasy. See pratt model.
