precision ranging

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A method used to find a distant spacecraft's position in the sky by angular position. Two deep-space network stations that are widely separated, such as those located in the USA and Australia, conduct ranging measurements so that a spacecraft can then be found by triangulation. Precision ranging can pinpoint both its location and distance (accurate to within metres at a distance as far as the planet Jupiter).
