Quick Reference

The young of a precocial (usually bird) species, in which hatching occurs late in ontogeny. In contrast to altricial species, in which hatching occurs early, the precocial bird is still inside the egg when the first feathers appear. Precocial young can usually move around and feed themselves just after hatching.
