A region in the front of the hypothalamus, sometimes regarded as being apart from the hypothalamus proper, implicated in sexual behaviour, aggression, slow-wave sleep, and thirst, containing osmoreceptors (2). Also called the preoptic area. [So called because it lies above the optic chiasm]
