The process of modifying a tooth as part of a restorative procedure. This may include the removal of caries, previously placed restorative materials, unsupported enamel and dentine, or reshaping of the interior and exterior surfaces as required to allow a restorative procedure to be satisfactorily completed. See also cavity design. A slice preparation is a type of cavity preparation in which a slice of the proximal convexity of the tooth is removed to achieve a shoulderless and cleansable margin.
