A Jewish name for Friday, i.e. the day preceding, and therefore employed in preparation for, the Sabbath. The title may perhaps also have been used for the day before certain other great feasts, e.g. the Passover. All four Gospels record that the Crucifixion took place on the Day of Preparation.
