The episode in Luke 2: 22–40 reflects the importance for this evangelist of Jerusalem and especially of the Temple. For Gentile readers it was necessary to stress the Jewish religious tradition which was part of their heritage and from which God's final redemption emerged. The ceremony involved first the purification of the mother, and then the redemption of the first‐born and the presentation of the infant for service. It took place forty days after the birth.
