The US Public Health Service's expert committee that was established in 1984, following the lead of the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination. The task force of some 20 experts studied and made recommendations about a wide range of strategies, tactics, methods, and procedures to promote health and prevent disease, injury, and premature death, with emphasis on the role of clinicians. In 1989, its first large report described 169 preventive interventions, providing evidence on the efficacy of each. There have since been many additional recommendations.
