Ger.‐born pianist, conductor, and composer (Amer. cit. 1943). Went to USA 1939. Once a jazz pianist, he later worked as composer and arranger of film mus. in Hollywood. Début as cond., St Louis SO 1962. Cond.‐in‐chief, LSO, 1968–79; settled in Eng. where he won popular following as presenter of mus. on tv. Champion of Eng. mus., notably Walton and Vaughan Williams (whose 9 syms. he recorded). Cond. Houston SO, 1967–9, Pittsburgh SO 1976–84, mus. dir. RPO 1985–7 and prin. cond. 1987–92, mus. dir. Los Angeles PO 1985–90. Salzburg début 1973.
