Quick Reference
A motor protein (solute carrier family 26 member 5, 744 aa) that converts auditory stimuli to length changes in the outer cochlear hair cells and mediates sound amplification in the ear. Prestin is a bidirectional voltage-to-force converter; changes in the distribution of anions in response to changes in transmembrane voltage trigger conformational changes in the protein, with rapid (microsecond) mechanical consequences.
