Quick Reference

Cilia or ciliary rudiments, that, together with the basal body, act as mechanosensory organelles in a range of tissues: if a propulsive cilium is a motor then, by analogy, this is a generator. Many genetic diseases have been linked to the dysfunction of primary cilia, including Kartagener's syndrome, polycystic kidney disease, nephronophthisis, Bardet–Biedl syndrome, and Meckel's syndrome.
