In psychoanalysis, a primitive form of identification (2), occurring during the oral stage, before any other type of object-relationship is formed. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) described this phenomenon in his book The Ego and the Id (1923): ‘At the very beginning, in the individual's primitive oral stage, object-cathexis and identification are no doubt indistinguishable from each other’ (Standard Edition, XIX, pp. 12–66, at p. 29).
