A chemical used to treat the surface of enamel or dentine to improve bonding prior to the insertion of a restorative material. Primers, e.g. phosphoric acid, are usually applied in conjunction with an adhesive. Primers are also referred to as conditioners. Primers may be water-based, acetone-based, or alcohol-based.
