The phrase first appears with constitutional significance after the reorganization of the iuventūs by Augustus (see iuvenes). Probably in 5 and 2 bc respectively the equestrian order gave silver shields and spears to Augustus' grandsons Gaius Iulius Caesar 2 and Lucius Iulius Caesar, and hailed them as principēs iuventutis.
