Quick Reference

A technique used to study the role of the attention demands of movements of subjects performing a primary task while presented with an occasional stimulus (usually auditory) to which the subjects must respond. The reaction time to the stimulus is used as a measure of the attention demands of the primary task; low reaction times are assumed to indicate that the amount of attention required for the primary task is relatively small. The probe technique assumes that there is a fixed capacity for attention.
