Quick Reference

(1763)

A declaration that prohibited American settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains in an attempt by the British government to regularize relations between frontiersmen and Native Americans after the French and Indian wars. The royal proclamation also established governments for captured territory and imposed royal control on Native American traders. It antagonized land speculators, pioneers, and war veterans who had been promised land in the west. It was partially amended by subsequent treaties with Native American tribes.
