Quick Reference

A person (also prodigal son or prodigal daughter) who leaves home and behaves extravagantly and wastefully, but later makes a repentant return. The allusion is to the parable in Luke 15: 11–32, in which the younger son of a wealthy man wastes his substance abroad. Returning, repentant, to his home, he finds that while his elder brother grudges the welcome offered, his father rejoices and kills the fatted calf to make a celebratory feast.
