Quick Reference

Many of the professions that were well established by the 19th century were created during the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly in the post‐Restoration period. See Geoffrey Holmes, Augustan England: Professions, State and Society, 1680–1730 (1982). The law, the Church, and medicine became profitable and respectable means of earning a livelihood, especially in the towns, in contrast with ‘being in trade’.
