The vernacular office inserted into High Mass after the Offertory on Sundays and other feast days in the Middle Ages. It ordinarily consisted of such items as the ‘bidding of the beads’ (q.v.) and expositions of the Lord's Prayer and Creed, as well as notifications of ensuing feasts and fasts and banns of marriage.
