A polyprotein (241 aa) that is converted by serine peptidases (prohormone convertases) into several different hormones including adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), β-*lipotropin (β-LPH), corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide (CLIP), γ-LPH, α-melanotropin (α-MSH, α-*melanocyte-stimulating hormone), β-endorphin, γ-MSH, and β-MSH. Mutations in the gene can cause a variety of disorders, since point mutations may affect the cleavage sites for some derived hormones but not others.
