Small cysteine-rich secreted proteins that regulate diverse biological processes. Prokineticin 1 (endocrine gland vascular endothelial growth factor, 105 aa) induces proliferation, migration, and fenestration in capillary endothelial cells derived from endocrine glands. Prokineticin 2 (PK2, Bv8, 81 aa) is rhythmically expressed in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and may have effects on gastrointestinal activity. Mutations in the PK2 gene cause some forms of Kallmann's syndrome, other forms being caused by mutations in one of the two closely related G-protein-coupled receptors (PKR1 and PKR2).
