A major erythrocyte membrane skeletal protein (EPB42, 691 aa) that links protein 3 with ankyrin. It has homology with transglutaminase and the α subunit of coagulation factor XIII, but has no enzymatic activity. Protein 4.2 is mutated in the Japanese type of recessive spherocytic elliptocytosis and in some forms of recessive haemolytic anaemia. At one time was mistakenly thought to be pallidin.
