A serine/threonine protein kinase (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α kinase 2, 551 aa) that is activated by viral double-stranded RNA which causes it to autophosphorylate and to inhibit protein synthesis in the cell. It is induced by interferon and is part of the antiviral defence mechanism.
