A vitamin K-dependent plasma protein (635 aa) that inhibits blood clotting by acting as a nonenzymatic cofactor for activated protein C. About 40% of protein S in plasma is free and functionally active; the remainder is complexed with C4b-binding protein and inactive. Mutation leads to a form of thrombophilia.
