An international treaty, sponsored by the United Nations, which came into force on 23 October 2003, governing the reduction or complete elimination of harmful chemicals with long lifetimes. Substances covered include: dioxins, furans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), various pesticides (including DDT), polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and a flame retardant. The United States is not a signatory.
