The collection of protocols in a layered network architecture, together with the hierarchic relationship between the protocols. This relationship is characterized by the fact that one protocol makes use of another; for example, in the TCP-IP model, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol makes use of the Internet Protocol to carry out the transfer of Web pages from a Web server to a browser. The term is often abbreviated to stack.
