Quick Reference

Any test in which the respondent is asked to explain the figurative meaning of a series of proverbs. For example, the figurative meaning of the proverb A rolling stone gathers no moss is that a restless or wandering person does not become prosperous. In clinical practice it is sometimes used as a rough-and-ready test of thought disorder, the assumption being that people with thought disorder often have difficulty distinguishing between the literal and figurative meanings of proverbs.

Subjects: Psychology.
