protomers

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A general term for the subunits that are assembled to form a larger structure. Cell biological examples are G-actin, which assembles to filamentous F-actin, and the tubulin heterodimer which is the subunit for microtubules. The latter example illustrates the utility of a term that does not assume protomers to be single molecules.
