An approach to the study of people's perception and use of space developed by the anthropologist Edward T. Hall in the late 1960s. It is primarily concerned with what people do in relation to where they do it, how they experience the spaces in which they operate, and how they change the structure of space either to promote communications between people (sociopetal space) or to create conditions of solitariness (sociofugal space).
