The precursor of a galaxy. In the Big Bang model, galaxies are thought to form from large gas clouds which collapse under their own self-gravity. A protogalaxy is such a cloud which is just beginning to collapse. No protogalaxy has yet been unambiguously identified from astronomical observations.
