Intense irritation and discomfort in the anal region often exacerbated by scratching and secondary infections. Pruritis ani is often due to wearing tight clothes and is associated with heavy sweating; therefore, it is relatively common among athletes. Treatment consists of scrupulous toilet hygiene, careful washing and drying, followed (in some cases) by the application of hydrocortisone cream.
